Your Vistors Love Ads

On the discussion board of How to Start an Internet Business I found this comment: If I saw a lot of ads from pharaceutical companies on the site I might be less inclined to go any further into the site because I would suspect the doctor’s information of being biased.

I Answered:

Let me take a different slant on the issue of bias and advertising. We need to begin asking ourselves a fundamental question about Internet advertising. Right now there are billions of Internet surfers clicking on ads at this very moment. Let’s ask ourselves why? What’s motivating them to do so?

People click on ads because they’re seeking information on a topic and they believe that by clicking on the ad is going to lead them deeper into a search for the answer to the question they are trying to answer. On our hairstyle site right now one of every five visitors is clicking on some type of an ad. Those folks click on those ads in the hopes of finding answers to their hair struggles. I we did not provide those ads the vistor would be dead ended in her search for answers. She is going to continue her search anyhow so why don’t we help her out by providing places to go to get more information. My job is to help her find answers! I want her to remember us as the place to get hair answers period. The more I do that the more good things happen for everybody. Ads are a win-win for everybody.

The real issue on ads is relevancy.

If the article that the visitor is reading is about a topic of interest and at the Bottom of the article is an ad or a hyperlink to another web site that will get deeper into this topic you are providing s service for your visitors. Isn’t that what you created with your web site to begin with? Aren’t we really helping people find information? And if that be the case we are providing our users with additional services and enhancing their experiencing of visiting our sites by providing relevant ads.

If the ads aren’t relevant a course than the user is not going to click on them and is not confined those ads useful and in fact will probably see them as it did distraction so the real challenge for those of us who earn our living by selling advertising space on web sites is to provide relevant ads.
