bloggers vs. the old media

Ever since the turn of the millennium the "new medium" bloggers have operated with almost disdain for the "old media" newspapers, television, radio, magazines. Likewise the old media has loathed and feared this new upstart blogging community.

The hostility seemed so thick at times that you could cut through the air with a knife.

But I believe that both old and new media have much to gain by collaborating with one another. Old media is desperate to stem the tide of departing subscribers to the Internet. The new media can benefit by additional exposure and authoritative legitimacy. Lets own up to it folks, the new media suffers from an image issue. Unfortunately the new media of got off to quite a rocky start and was populated with lots of bad characters. But the wild West days of the new media are now fading and a new breed of blogger and Internet publisher is evolving. We are credible, ethical, willing to collaborate and share and above all straight up with our readers. It will take some time for this new breed of professional publisher to gain back the esteem and reputation that hopefully will rival that of old media.

Hoping to broaden out our efforts my wife Barb and I have broken new ground just recently by entering into a collaborative effort with an old media giant Harris Publications who publish 17 different hairstyle magazines. As many of you know, my wife Barb has a very popular hairstyle blog. Recently we entered into discussions with the Harris Publications people to provide them content from Barb’s blog in each issue Harris Publications will run a variety of posts from Barb’s most recent blog entries. A print version of a blog, if you will. The beauty is of course is Barbs URL will appear in the byline of each magazine.

The first issue hit the streets today Issue #46 of Color and Style magazine. We are pretty confident that this is going to bring significant new traffic as well as new credibility to Barb’s blog. To top it all off with a being paid for content that we had already written. What does Harris Publications get out of all of this; they get to create an image with their young tech savvy readers that they are state-of-the-art and are connecting with them online and keeping up with the buzz from new outlets for hair information. Plus they’re getting content which in the hairstyle industry is very difficult to come by, the hairstyling industry is not known for its literary giants.

To win-win for everyone I highly recommend any of you who are now on the public Internet publishing business to look around into your industry and see if there aren’t some old media types that you could connect to you might be surprised at their willingness to talk.
